We are currently hiring a field site manager to coordinate our day-to-day operations on the ground.

Job responsibilities include:

  • Communicating with director and other team members about day-to-day operations.  The person who fills this position will serve as the communication hub for the entire operation, making clear and effective communication (via email, phone calls, written reports, etc) essential.
  • Liaising with village leaders, park authorities, villagers and staff to coordinate program activities.
  • Identifying problems as they arise (ie: scheduling difficulties, logistical challenges, conflicts among staff, volunteers and/or stakeholders, etc) and involving the appropriate people in their resolution.
  • Entering and managing data for multiple projects.
  • Coordinating schedules, and supervising field staff and volunteers.
  • Maintaining camp and field equipment (including vehicles).
  • Keeping detailed records of expenses/budgets.
  • Posting to social media, writing blogs and contributing to quarterly newsletters.
  • Building capacity of local staff.

Required qualifications:

  • Highly organized
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Flexible, adaptable, personable, and culturally sensitive
  • Able to keep calm and work effectively under pressure
  • Excellent problem solving skills
  • Passion for working at the interface of people and wildlife
  • Self-starter who is able to work independently, but also as part of a team
  • Strong leadership skills, preferably with project management experience
  • Comfortable living in remote areas under very basic living conditions (ie: no running water and limited electricity)
  • Experience living and/or working in a developing country, preferably in East Africa
  • Knowledge of wilderness safety, preferably with CPR/First Aid and/or Wilderness First Responder training
  • Experience with scientific data collection and entry
  • Comfortable driving 4 wheel-drive vehicle with manual transmission in the bush
  • Fluency in English, both written and spoken
  • Willingness to learn Kiswahili
  • Bachelor’s degree in natural resources or related field

Preferred but not necessary:

  • Experience supervising and/or coordinating volunteers
  • Knowledge of cars, particularly diesel engines
  • Some knowledge of Kiswahili

Compensation and term of employment

The applicant will be responsible for expenses associated with traveling to the field site, as well as medical insurance and vaccinations.  Food, accommodation, and a modest living stipend will be provided.  The cost of visas (approximately $850) will be reimbursed upon successful completion of 12-month commitment.  Please wait to submit your application materials until you are sure of your ability to cover all of the required costs.
